Online shopping adventures
I didn’t buy much online before the pandemic. I tried to support local when I could – and they weren’t usually online back then. I like to see and touch things, holding them and thinking about how they will fit with what I already own. Do I really need another pot? Is it really that much bigger than mine? Love the colour of that shirt, but not the feel of the fabric. Will that weighty vase will fit well in my collection Online shopping seemed to deprive me of that tactile and 3D experience – and for me, that was… Read more…

Here we go again
Does anyone else feel like we’re living in the movie Groundhog Day? Cases are down, let’s reopen. Cases are up, close down again, but only sort of. And repeat. Ad nauseam. It reminds me a bit of the childhood camp song we learned from Sharon Lewis and Lambchop. This is the song that never ends… You can thank me later for putting that ear worm in your head! Moving Day!
Today is moving day. After carefully nurturing my public musings through their babyhood and toddler years, my blog has outgrown its original home and is ready for more. When my kids were six, they all left the safety of their kindergarten classes and headed off to a new school to begin Grade 1. You’ll find new features, including a graphic identity, a more robust commenting feature (I do hope you’ll use it and… Read more…

Who chooses your news?
I’ve been reading a lot about Facebook and possible soon-to-come Twitter algorithms recently and it’s a bit frightening. You probably know – although maybe not – that your Facebook news stream is ranked. According to a 2013 article by Facebook itself, the newsfeed algorithm responds to what you do, including things like: How often you interact with the friend, page, or public figure (like an actor or journalist) who posted The number of likes, shares and comments a post receives from the world at large and from your friends in particular How much you have interacted with this type of post in the… Read more…

My sad, sad attempt to temporarily give up tech
Back in mid-July, I mentioned that I was going to try and go on a short holiday without any devices. It was only a few days, after all, so how difficult could it be? Apparently, harder than I thought! With my iPad and computer safely stored at home, I headed out for a few days of peaceful solitude, interspersed with some of the best theatre Canada has to offer. My phone came with me for safety, and just in case there were emergencies at the kid’s camps. All sound and vibration was turned off and the plan was for it… Read more…
