Meet Fiona O’Reilly. Fiona is the main character of Another Glass of Tea, a feisty red-headed fireball, who gamely takes on everything life throws at her. She’s gritty and determined to make the best of the challenges and opportunities she’s handed –from living in a foreign country for a year to starting a business of her own. She somehow manages to juggle that business and four young children, raising them to be good people themselves.
But Fiona’s not infallible. Sometimes she bites off more than she can chew, and it takes those around her to remind her that she is not alone. She can – and should – ask for help. Her village is there to support her. She forgets that sometimes, but
I made Fiona petite – she just grazes the five foot mark – because I wanted her to feel she needs to prove herself. I gave her grey eyes because they’re unusual, and I loved the idea that even mood can affect the way grey eyes appear. I hope it gives Fiona a bit of an air of mystery.
While Another Glass of Tea focuses on many different characters, it’s really Fiona’s story. It follows her through the ups and downs of love, parenthood, friendship and family. For the most part, it tries to portray a “real” reality. There are no knights in shining armour sweeping in to save her.
But Fiona doesn’t need saving. She’s smart and strong, with a strong network around her. I’d kind of like to be her friend! I really like her.
I hope you will to.
